In general, it’s best to always be aware of the sites and content your child is engaging with online. The best method to gather this information is simply through asking your kids exactly what they like to do, and where they like to go on the web. Find out not only what sites they visit, but what kinds of things they do on each site. Do they play games? Fill out profiles? Provide any personal information?

Educate your kids about what information they should always keep sacred. Full names and addresses should only be provided by you, and only when purchasing content or merchandise online. Otherwise, always use anonymous user names or first names. If you want to limit this kind of knowledge share all together, make sure your child knows exactly what’s acceptable to you.

You can also monitor where your kids are going online by using your browser’s cache and history – each browser saves a certain amount of past activity to help you keep track of when and where they’re surfing. Likewise, many companies make reputable software that will track everything kids do on the computer, down to the last keystroke if you choose to be that detailed.

Regardless, remember that while the Internet offers endless opportunities for entertainment and education, there are basic online safety guidelines that should always be practiced. Teaching your kids these simple rules will ensure worry-free web interactions.

*Never share account IDs or passwords with ANYONE, no matter if they’re a friend or a stranger

* Keep your screen names limited to nicknames or fun monikers, and don’t include personal info (real name, location references)

* Keep person details private when chatting, emailing or connecting with anyone

* Don’t share photos of yourself or your family and friends with people you don’t know

* If anyone says mean or threatening things to you, don’t respond – report it to the site and to your parents and ignore these comments

* Don’t open emails from sources you don’t know – just delete them

* Remember that nothing on the web is private – be careful what you share on a public forum

* Don’t ever make plans to meet someone in person that you’ve only previously known online

ZuCamp hopes these tips will be valuable to you and your family, and thanks for being a ZuCamper!
